The 74th Colorado High School
Activities Association State wrestling tournament got underway at 7:15 PM
on Thursday night, February 19, for class 5A. Grandview won two of
six matches in the opening round. Eric Wilson (119) and Penn Wade
both won by fall.
The significance of a wrestlers place at the regional tournament becomes
a reality on opening night at state. The Wolves had three
wrestlers finish in the fourth place spot at regionals which means they
are paired with a regional champion in the first round at state.
112 pounder John Godin wrestled regionals champion and second ranked
Mike Sikorski from Pine Creek and lost by fall in the third period.
152 pounder Josh Starr wrestled regional champion
Jacob Deaguero from Adams City and lost by
decision, 3-10. And, 189 pounder Enes Ozekin wrestled regional
champion, returning state champion and second ranked Casey Norgard from
Rocky Mountain and lost 0-6.
The Wolves 125 pounder, Michael Balagna, placed second in last week's
region 1 tournament. He was paired up with region 3's third place
finisher from Fruita-Monument, Jeff Gonzales, and lost 2-3.
