Wrestling: 30 city wrestlers
make state
Nine of 10 Aurora schools to
have at least one wrestler
at Pepsi Center

AURORA
| City wrestling teams
were spread out for four
Class 5A regional
tournaments on Friday
and Saturday, but will
come together this week
for the state
tournament.
Thirty wrestlers from
nine Aurora schools
punched their tickets to
the Pepsi Center in
downtown Denver, where
they will vie for 5A
state titles Feb. 19-21.
Nineteen of the 30 will
make their first
appearances at state.
Grandview led city teams
in numbers as it has for
several years with six
Wolves surviving Region
1 action at Eaglecrest,
topped by senior
119-pounder Eric Wilson,
the teams lone regional
champion. Wilson, a
state champion at 112
pounds last season, won
an 11-5 decision over
Ponderosa's Sam Jones in
the regional final.
Four Eaglecrest
wrestlers and one from
Overland 130-pound
regional champion Josh
Christopher also came
out of Region 1.
The next best regional
for city teams was
Region 3 at Legacy High
School, where Regis came
away with five
qualifiers and Gateway
four, though neither
team had a regional
champion.
Region 2 at Smoky Hill
produced five state
qualifiers between the
host Buffaloes (two) and
Aurora Central (three).
The
trip to the Region 4
tournament at Central of
Grand Junction was worth
it for Cherokee Trail,
which had four state
qualifiers the most in
school history in its
first season in 5A.
Junior Ethan Hales won a
regional championship by
pinning fourth-ranked
Derek Stearns of
Northglenn in the
152-pound title match.
Rangeview also came out
with a single qualifier
from Region 4 in junior
160-pounder Hunter
McGuinniss, who placed
third.
