The 72nd
Annual State Wrestling Tournament got underway on
Thursday, February 15, 2007. Grandview got off to a
slow start with just one win, 135 pounder Tyler
McGoffin, in eight matches.
McGoffin advanced to the
championship match with victories over Matt Hage
(4-1) from Fruita, a close 12-11 win over tough
Rhett Breed from Durango and an 11-1 win over
Adam Jerome from Rangeview to make it into the
championship match against Wasson's Casey Cruz.
Cruz finished second at 135 in the 2006 State
Tournament and won the championship match in
2007 by fall in the second period over McGoffin.
Cruz finished the season a perfect 40-0.
Eric Wilson came into the tournament as a
regional champion and was paired against a
number four place regional finisher from
Chaparral, Micah Self. Wilson lost 8-5 in the
opening round and began the long journey on the
consolation side of the bracket on Friday with
wins over Durango's Ty Penning (10-4) and Aurora
Central's Ivan Mondragon (16-0). In a rematch of
the Region 3 championship, Wilson decisioned
Brighton's Jeremy Roblebo 5-3 in the first round
on Saturday to make the top six. Then, he
avenged the Thursday night loss to Chaparral's
Self, 7-1, and advanced to the third place
bracket where he met the Region 2 champion from
Legacy, Christopher Wessel, and won, 3-1, to
secure the third place spot.
Grandview finished the tournament in a tie for
17th place with Pine Creek with 41.5 points.
