AURORA | Deyaun Trueblood believes he’s built for wrestling in big stadiums like the Pepsi Center.
The Gateway freshman looked at home on the big stage Thursday night during the preliminary round of the Class 5A state wrestling tournament, as he shuffled the 145-pound weight bracket with a significant 7-6 upset of favored Torry Williams of Ponderosa.
Aurora had a lot of cool customers in the preliminaries, as 14 of the 26 wrestlers in action advanced to Friday’s 1 p.m. quarterfinal round, including three each from Eaglecrest and Grandview and two each from Cherokee Trail, Gateway and Regis Jesuit.
Trueblood came in as a No. 4 seed out of Region 4 and had to face Williams, the Region 1 champion who was projected to place third by On The Mat. Williams still could take third, but he’ll have a much longer route thanks to his loss to Trueblood
Two other Aurora freshmen won their debut matches, as Grandview 113-pounder Xavier Cardenas and heavyweight Josh Vigil-Harrison both won by fall to advance to the quarterfinals. Cardenas pinned Gateway senior Sergio Marquez in an all-Aurora opener, while Vigil-Harrison pinned Castle View’s Joe Hunsaker in the first period of their match.
Senior Jordan Brown gave the Wolves three in the quarterfinals with his pin at 160 pounds.
Three of Eaglecrest’s four state qualifiers won their first-round matches, as 170-pounder Adin Puris, 182-pounder Trevon Beauford and heavyweight Mike Howshar each posted decisive victories to advance.
Cherokee Trail had most qualifiers of any city team with six and two of them moved on in junior 152-pounder Harley Korte and senior heavyweight Garrett Zimmerman, who both won by fall. Senior 132-pounder Bruno Nicoletti, who placed fifth at 106 pounds last season, was pinned in his first round match against Arvada West’s Bennie Pachello.
Aurora’s two expected state championship contenders had little trouble with their first round opponents, as Regis Jesuit junior 195-pounder Grant Neal won by fall in 59 seconds and Overland senior 220-pounder Amer Tipura got his pin in 2:32.
At least two Aurora wrestlers will be part of the 7:15 p.m. semifinal round as well, as Tipura faces off with Smoky Hill’s Dexter Bess — who recorded a quick pin of Rock Canyon’s Brendan Frazier and Howshar goes against Zimmerman.
Both are Centennial League rematches.
