Grandview coach Greg Maestas saw a chance
to win matches at 140 and 145 pounds, so he flip-flopped David Rose and
Sean Burroughs in the lineup. The strategy paid off, as Rose — typically
a 145-pounder — pinned the Bruins' Adam Martelon at 140, while Burroughs
won by fall late in the second period against Cherry Creek's Mike Ganny.
The Wolves received a forfeit at 152
pounds to Eric Bagnard and Jake Fisher rallied from a 4-1 deficit to pin
aggressive Remy Baumgartel in the 160-pound match to put his team ahead
by a commanding 33-0 count.
Evan Quant got Cherry Creek on the
scoreboard with a pin of Darren Rutledge at 171 pounds, but Pavlo
Ivanusa won an 8-4 decision in the next back to help Grandview turn the
tide, which was big with the Bruins sending Tanner Harms up next at 215
pounds.
Harms — who came in with a 25-1 record
after winning his weight at the Top of the Rockies — dominated against
Grandview's Jimmy Short, going up 9-0 with a takedown and turning it
into a pin 22 seconds into the second period. Cherry Creek forfeited the
285 pound class and the teams split the final four matches at the
lightest weights.
Grandview's Josh Federico, fresh off
second place at 103 pounds at the Top of the Rockies, won a tight battle
5-3 against Cherry Creek's Mitch Finesilver, while Zach Finesilver
countered with a 10-0 major decision against Federico's training
partner, Eric Ruoff, at 112 pounds. The two met in a 112-pound match at
the Top of the Rockies, with Finesilver beating Ruoff 5-0 that time on
his way to fourth. Ruoff took sixth, joining Federico as Grandview's
only placers.
Cherry Creek's Brady Tellis — a state
placer two years ago — dealt Tony Mendieta a 10-0 major decision defeat
at 119 pounds, while Grandview's Dee Hernandez capped the meet by
mauling Cherry Creek's Cody Grenz for a win at 125 pounds. Hernandez
picked up the Wolves' fifth pin of the night when he stuck Grenz midway
through the second period.
