One Away

Josh Federico, John Godin and
Sean Burroughs have made it to the third day of the 75th Annual CHSAA
State Wrestling Championships and they are one win away from placing in
the top six.
Senior Derek Olson won his wrestleback at
the Region 1 tournament and the fourth place seed at state but lost to
number one seed Cody Harris from Denver East in the first round and he
was eliminated in the first consolation round by Cherokee Trail's Willy
Gustin.
Federico was not rewarded kindly for his second place finish at
regional when he was placed in the top half of the bracket with three of
the top four ranked wrestlers in his weight class. He lost to Pine
Creek's Geo Martinez in the opening round but, started his come back on
the consolation side of the bracket with wins over Green Mountain's
Tyler Dirschl (Tech Fall, 16-1) and Boulder's Babalu Jones (7-0).
He must beat Coronado's Devon Cruz in the next round to be assured of a
medal.
Godin started the tournament off with a win
by fall over Ponderosa's Sam Jones before losing to Loveland's Chance
Leingang, 6-12, in the quarter finals. He picked up an 8-5 win on the
consolation side of the bracket against Bear Creek's Kyle Grosvenor and
will face Legacy's Mark Dubberly in the next consolation round for the
opportunity to finish in the top six.
Burroughs came up just short in the opening
round with a one point loss, 1-2, to Pine Creek's Jerry McGinty but
recovered with two wins on the consolation side. The first against
Monarch's Jared Ferrera, 3-1 and the second against Chatfield's Dakota
Thayer, 3-2. He will face Northglenn's Nick Ortega in the next round to
make the final six.

Finishes Fifth

Junior Josh Federico defeated
Coronado's Devon Cruz, 6-2, in the opening round of the final day of the
2010 Colorado State Wrestling Championships and assured himself a medal
and a finish in the top six. Federico lost the next round to Grand
Junction's Dylan Thompson but won the fifth place match, 4-0, over
Pomona's Austin Marvel.
Senior John Godin lost a 2-7 decision to Legacy's Mark Dubberly and
Sophomore Sean Burroughs lost, 1-7, to Nick Ortega of Northglenn and
finished one away from placing in the top six.
