The Grandview
wrestling team’s trip to Reno, Nev., prior to
the winter break yielded the Wolves’ biggest
jackpot at the Reno Tournament of Champions.
Only one wrestler — 2008 state champion Eric
Wilson — placed in the elite tournament
featuring teams from across the country, but
four of Grandview’s other 10 entries came within
a match of placing and 11 of 12 won at least one
match as the Wolves took 23rd out of 82 teams.
Grandview’s previous best finish was 40th
according to head coach Greg Maestas.
“I’m really pleased; we had a great first two
rounds,” Maestas said. “When you go to a
tournament like that, the competition gets
tougher after that.”
Wilson went 0-2 in Reno last season, but
finished the 2009 tournament at 5-2 in the
119-pound bracket. He was seventh by virtue of a
4-1 win over Sean Silva of Barstow, Calif.
Senior Josh Starr also went 5-2 at 152 pounds,
but missed placing by a match.
