Wrestling: Slinkard championship highlight of Region 2
Regis, Smoky Hill, Gateway net nine state qualifiers from Fort Collins

FORT COLLINS | An injury kept Regis junior Powell Slinkard from wrestling at regionals last year.

When Slinkard finally got his chance, he took advantage, winning the 140-pound championship at the Class 5A Region 2 tournament Feb. 16 at Fort Collins High School.

Slinkard pinned Mountain Vista's Matt Conahan in 4 minutes, 51 seconds, to become Aurora's only regional champion among nine wrestlers who qualified for the 5A state meet between the city's three teams on hand, Regis, Gateway and Smoky Hill. Slinkard improved to 33-11 overall.

Senior Danny Bieshaar (130 pounds) and junior Zach Atencio (135 pounds) each lost decisions in championship matches for the Raiders, who finished seventh as a team with 118.5 points. Freshman Denzel Washington rounded out Regis' 5A state tournament contingent, placing fourth at 152 pounds.

Bieshaar came into the tournament ranked No. 2 in 5A at 130 pounds and pinned his first two opponents before meeting Rocky Mountain's Tito Laureles, ranked No. 4, in the title match. Bieshaar (43-4) led 5-3 going into the final period, but Laureles caught him a few times in the third-period blitz that resulted in an 11-5 victory for the Lobos' standout.

Atencio, who got knocked unconscious during regionals last year and couldn't finish the meet, also pinned his first two opponents until he ran into Brighton's Luke Case in the 135-pound final. Atencio (35-9) led 3-2 going to the third period, but gave up one point for locking hands and lost a 5-3 decision when Case scored a reversal with less than a minute left.

Smoky Hill finished eighth with three qualifiers, the school's largest group headed to Pepsi Center in several years, as 125-pound Nolan Myers, 130-pounder Joe Jones and 171-pounder Ethan Myers - all seniors - advanced.

Nolan Myers rebounded from a one-point loss to ThunderRidge's Tyler Nelson in the semifinals with wins over Regis' Andrew Onorato and Legacy's Adam Dunne to earn his third straight trip to state. Jones and Ethan Myers each made it downtown for the first time, with Jones losing a major decision to eventual tournament champion Tito Laureles of Rocky Mountain in the semifinals before coming back with a comfortable 8-2 win over Gateway sophomore LaDaris Mungin in the third-place match and Myers staving off ThunderRidge's Cody Barday 5-4 in a wrestleback.

Gateway junior Justin Freeman and Mungin each punched their first tickets to state, placing second and fourth, respectively.

Freeman made the championship match at 145 pounds - thanks to an epic 7-5 double overtime win in the semifinals over Thornton's Kyle Johnson - but got pinned by Rocky Mountain's Greg Padilla early in the second period. Mungin lost to Bieshaar for the fourth time this season in the semifinals and also lost to Jones in the third-place match, but his wins over Pine Creek's Ben Molina and Bear Creek's Josh Velazquez kept him from facing a wrestleback.

Aurora wrestlers were involved in five wrestlebacks, with Myers posting the lone victory. Onorato and 160-pounder Brian Rubenstrunk, a state qualifier last year, lost in wrestlebacks for Regis, while Smoky Hill 145-pounder Nick Shamburg and Gateway senior heavyweight Edwardo Lopez also fell short.

Aurora's six other 5A teams were scattered around at the other three regionals tournaments, while Cherokee Trail played host to a 4A regional.

At Region 4 at Columbine, Grandview finished second as a team and qualified eight wrestlers for state, including regional champions Eric Wilson (103 pounds), Patrick Brown (135 pounds) and Cody Gilmore (heavyweight).

The 5A state tournament is Feb. 21-23 at the Pepsi Center.
