Streak Ends At 42
February 8, 2008
Grandview took a
six year, 42 consecutive Centennial League win streak to Boulder High
School on Thursday, February 7 and lost 30-37. The Wolves were missing 4
starters in the lineup. Four wrestlers moved up a weight to create the
most favorable pairings, three wrestlers stepped into the lineup and
gave all they had to give, the Wolves forfeited one weight class and
they still had a chance to win going into the final match of the dual.
Eric Wilson moved up to 119 from 112 and won the first match of the
evening by fall in the
third period. Michael Balagna moved up
to 125 from 119 and delivered another big win by fall in
the second period. Joe
Tripp moved up to 130 from 125 and lost a 4-1 decision. Bryce Barrick
moved up to 135 from 130 and
lost by a takedown in overtime. Then, Matt Fedderson lost by fall in the first
period and the team score was tied
12-12. Josh Starr won a 9-4 decision but
freshman Michael Brazile, wrestling in his first varsity match, lost by fall.
The
Wolves forfeited the 160 pound weight class and Enes
Ozekin lost by major and the Wolves fell behind, 15-28. Jacob Bomareto won by decision in
overtime and Tom Flynn stepped into the lineup
at 215 and gave it all he had but came up short
in a 2-7 decision. Cody Gilmore wasted little
time and won by fall in the 285 pound bout and
John Godin was up to the task when he put away his feisty opponent in
the second period. Grandview had closed the
gap and they were in a position to win the
dual going into the final match trailing
30-31. Sophomore Dan Godin was
inserted into the lineup at 112 pounds for the
second time this season but this match had a lot more at stake than his
first match. It would
decide the outcome of the dual and the league title. It was an exciting
match. Takedowns, back points, reversals and
an injury timeout for Godin in the second
period and the score was tied 6-6. The
Boulder fans were loud, the music was loud,
the gym was filled with excitement. It
appeared that Boulder was able to capture
the momentum during this break and Godin
lost by fall in the third period.
While Boulder was quick to declare
themselves "league champions" following the
final match, the fact is ... Boulder lost to
Fairview, Fairview lost to Grandview and
Grandview lost to Boulder so, it appears
there is a three way tie for the 2007-2008
Centennial League Championship.
