Wrestling: Grandview takes sixth at Arvada West
Wilson, Gilmore place second in stacked tournament

ARVADA | With just a month left before the Class 5A state
wrestling tournament, Grandview is rounding into form.
Behind finalists Eric Wilson and Cody Gilmore, the Wolves
finished sixth among 16 teams on Jan. 12 at the loaded Arvada
West Invitational, which featured 60 wrestlers ranked in either
5A or 4A.
Wilson and Gilmore both lost to top-ranked foes at 112 pounds
and 275 pounds, respectively, but Grandview scored 102 points to
finish just seven points behind fourth-place Air Academy (109)
and three behind No. 5 Brighton (105). The top three - 5A
powerhouse Ponderosa, Legacy and 4A elite Thompson Valley.
No third-place matches were wrestled, but sophomore John Godin
(103), junior Michael Balagna (119) and junior Josh Starr (140)
made it that far for the Wolves.
The heavyweight championship clash of Gilmore and Ponderosa's
Taylor Stamm was one of several meetings between the top two
wrestlers in the state at each position - a potential preview of
the final at the Pepsi Center.
Gilmore came in ranked second with a 17-2 record and worked his
way through Pomona's Kyle Taeffe and Thompson Valley's Alex
Remmo to reach the final. Stamm got a bye in the first round and
won by injury forfeit in the second round, so he wrestled just
once - pinning Adams City's LeRoy Vigil in the semifinals -
before the championship match. In the last match of the day,
Stamm pinned Gilmore in 2 minutes, 31 seconds.
The
112-pound semifinals included four of the top five-ranked
wrestlers in the state, including No. 3 Wilson, who earned his
way to the championship match with a 9-3 victory over
fourth-ranked Aaron Ortiz in the semis after defeating Clayton
Garza of Elizabeth and Cherry Creek's Brad Cohn in the first two
rounds. Rocky Mountain's Jeremy Schmitt came into the tournament
at No. 2 and handled Wilson 5-1 in the championship match,
dropping the Grandview junior to 15-3 on the year.
Balagna made the 119-pound semifinals before he was pinned by
eventual champion Chris Wessel of Legacy, but he rallied to beat
Heritage's Kyle Hurt to make the third-place match. Starr faced
Ponderosa standout Jake Snider in the 140-pound semis and was
pinned in the second round.
Junior Jacob Bomareto was another semifinalist for the Wolves,
but he was pinned in the first period of the 189-pound
semifinals by Thompson Valley's Mike Dellato and lost to
Ponderosa's Zach Pella in the consolation semis.
