'Fab-ulous' Santillan captures long awaited state championship

On a quest since he was 5, Grandview junior takes advantage of chance to win a state crown

By Courtney Oakes
The Aurora Sentinel

Exactly what Fabian Santillan heard from his longtime coach Ben Menzor Feb. 17 under the bright lights at Pepsi Center remains private, but it definitely included the words “you deserve this.”

With Menzor, his wrestling father figure in his corner, the Grandview junior claimed a state championship that was 12 years in the making with a 4-1 win over Adams City’s Nicholas Gonzales in the Class 5A 126-pound final.  Story ->

Fabian Santillan became the sixth State Champion and the second in two seasons for Coach Ryan Budd and the Grandview Wolves with his 4-1 win over Adams City's Nicholas Sanchez in the Class 5A state 126-pound finals match on Feb. 17, 2018, at the Pepsi Center in Denver. The team finished in 6th place with 98 points and for the third season in a row finished in the top eight in the team standings. This is the most points ever scored by a Grandview team at the State Tournament.

Santillan's brother, Alex, a sophomore, finished third at 113. Senior Giovanni Federico finished third at 120. Sophomore Joe Renner finished fourth at 195 and junior Dylan Ranieri finished fifth at 145.

DENVER | Fabian Santillan felt he belonged in a state championship match at last season’s Class 5A state wrestling tournament, but injuries kept that from happening.

The Grandview junior came back with a vengeance in hopes of a title shot this season and now he has it, as his 9-6 semifinal victory over Coronado’s Aaron Flores Friday night at Pepsi Center landed him a spot in Saturday’s finals.  Story ->

Grandview gets on a roll, downs rival Cherokee Trail 52-18 in Centennial League dual

Wolves rack up eight pins to top Cougars for fifth straight time

by Courtney Oakes1/15/18

AURORA | Up 12-6 four matches into Thursday night’s Centennial League wrestling dual at Grandview, Cherokee Trail coach Jeff Buck was hopeful, but sensed what was coming.

With a primarily young lineup with some missing pieces, Buck knew the Cougars would have trouble holding off the talented Wolves.

Indeed, coach Ryan Budd’s Grandview team can roaring back with nine wins in the final 10 matches of the night — including six by fall — on its way to an impressive 52-18 victory over the rival Cougars in a pivotal league match.  Story ->
